In 2007 we began planting grapevines with the hope of starting a new hobby and furthering an already established joy for all things that grow. Instead of a hobby, we got much more. What began as a side project quickly became an absolute passion for grape cultivation and craft-wine production. From the molecules in the soil of the vineyard to the bouquet of the finished product, we have focused our ambition on crafting wines of outstanding quality. In 2012 our passion exploded into what has become two locations and dozens of wines, ciders and meads all handcrafted with a unique flavor profiles in mind. 

​We searched briefly for a name, but “Papa Moon” became the obvious choice as it had already been well established as the moniker for owner Jim Massey by his grandson Liam. On moonlit nights on the countryside vineyard, Jim Massey began a tradition of taking 1-year old Liam outside to gaze at the moon. Before long, Liam began affectionately referring to his grandfather as ”Papa Moon" and the name stuck.

Since 2013 we have been producing high quality wines from grapes harvested with the help of family and friends at our family vineyard. We aim to continually produce excellent quality wines in the artisanal tradition and to innovate our product with new ideas and methods.

Wishing to further develop our craft and branch out to offer a more diverse selection of handcrafted beverages; with the enthusiastic endorsement of our neighbor, we picked several bushels of apples from his tree to make hard apple cider. What started as a very small (but ultimately outstanding) batch has grown into the expansion of a second location in town, known as ‘Headquarters’.

Our portfolio has expanded into hard ciders & mead. Our ciders continue to take top honors and medals from all across the country. We are extremely proud to be Western Nebraska's first craft beverage producer.

Western Nebraska's best! Our property offers a complete escape. Featuring a babbling stream running through the property into a small pond that overlooks natural wetlands and peaceful cattle grazing in green pastures; mature trees, a quaint vineyard, and an abundance of wildlife make Papa Moon a true oasis on the prairie. Gather at the long table or fire pit and enjoy one of our handcrafted wines, ciders or meads.
